A beginner’s guide

The Sun is a star at the center of our solar system. It is a giant sphere of hot plasma that gives off heat and light. The sun is essential for life on earth. It gives us energy, warmth and light.

The structure of the sun

The Sun is made up of three main layers:

Core: This is the hottest part of the Sun. This is where nuclear fusion takes place. Nuclear fusion is a process in which hydrogen atoms combine to form helium atoms. This process releases a lot of energy.
Radiative Zone: This is a layer of plasma that surrounds the core. Energy from the core is transported outward through this layer.
Convective Zone: It is the outermost layer of the Sun. Heat and energy from the radiative zone are transported to the surface of the Sun by convection.
The atmosphere of the sun

The Sun’s atmosphere is made up of three main layers:

Photosphere: This is the visible surface of the Sun. It is a thin layer of plasma that is about 100 km thick.
Chromosphere: It is a layer of plasma that surrounds the photosphere. It is about 2,000 km thick.
Corona: It is the outermost layer of the Sun’s atmosphere. It is a vast region of hot plasma that stretches millions of kilometers into space.
Solar activity

The Sun is a very active star. It is constantly changing and evolving. The Sun’s activity is driven by the movement of plasma in its interior. This movement can cause sunspots, solar flares and coronal mass ejections.

Sunspots

Sunspots are dark spots that appear on the surface of the Sun. They are regions of cooler plasma surrounded by magnetic fields. Sunspots can be as big as Earth.

Solar flares

Solar flares are sudden bursts of energy that occur on the surface of the Sun. These are caused by the release of magnetic energy stored in sunspots. Solar flares can produce X-rays, ultraviolet radiation and radio waves.

Coronal mass ejection

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large clouds of plasma that are ejected from the Sun’s corona. CMEs can travel through space at speeds of millions of kilometers per hour. They can disrupt communications and power grids on Earth.
